Congratulations on finding the original glass magnet fingerprint craft tutorial! My daughter and I invented this fingerprint craft idea in 2017, the same day we made the first fingerprint flower and thumbprint heart magnet crafts. It was the glorious day I figured out how to preserve her precious toddler artwork under glass and turn it into a magnet, as shown in the photograph of our original fingerprint magnets below, to give to my family (and keep for myself!). Please note: I regularly update and republish this post to improve the content and remain current.
There were a few other glass magnet crafts and several fingerprint art and craft ideas, including the fingerprint art book selections below. However, there were no fingerprint art glass magnet crafts like the ones we made in the photographs above and below. So, we decided to share this easy keepsake craft tutorial to help everyone make these sweet homemade keepsake gifts for friends and family.

Fingerprint Art Glass Magnet Craft Supplies:
- Heavyweight paper (bright white cardstock works great!).
- If you want to pre-cut paper circles before making fingerprint magnets, I recommend using a precision knife with a cutting mat to trace them and cut them out or this circle cutter.
- Fine-tip permanent marker (black).
- Finger ink pads or acrylic paint (You might also want a paintbrush or foam brush to apply to fingers and thumbs if you use paint).
- My daughter and I used finger ink pads to make the fingerprint and thumbprint art shown in the photos and fingerprint magnet video tutorial below.
- However, acrylic paint, when used sparingly, also works well.
- If the art prints are sloppy, they can smear the art if it is not completely dry when glued on the magnet.
- It can also be challenging to decorate the fingerprint with a black marker and glue the magnet onto fingerprint art made with too much paint.
- Extra-large clear glass gems. These large clear 1 1/2 to 2-inch glass gems can sometimes be found at the dollar store, but they are often smaller and not completely transparent.
- Please ensure the glass stones have no iridescent coating, which can affect the fingerprint craft’s outcome.
- Glass gems are also known as flat-back marbles, table scatter, cabochons, or floral stones and are available at most hobby and craft stores and some floral shops.
- Small craft scissors for kids or precision detail scissors.
- Clear drying glue or jewelry adhesive and a foam brush:
- We initially used Mod Podge to make these crafts, as shown in the video tutorial. However, other clear-drying white glues, tacky craft glues, diamond glaze adhesives, and other jewelry adhesives also work well.
- 1-inch ceramic magnets.
- Or buy glass gems and magnets–>HERE.
- Please note: the glass gems in this magnet crafting kit are perfectly round and smaller than those recommended above and, thus, may not fit over your fingerprint art creations.

How to Make Fingerprint Magnets:
Select clear glass gems, floral stones, cabochons, or flat-backed marbles. (These glass stones are typically available at craft and hobby stores, dollar stores, florists, and on Amazon.) Please ensure the glass gems are large enough to fit over your fingerprint or thumbprint art and do not have any iridescent coating or finish that can interfere with the crafting process. Next, press your thumb or fingertip into a fingerprint ink pad, dip it in paint, or use a foam brush or paintbrush to brush paint lightly onto the tip of your finger. Then, stamp fingers and thumbs to create art prints for magnet crafts. Reapply ink or paint as needed using as many colors as you like.
To create art prints with fingers and thumbs, copy the fingerprint art shown in the photographs and video tutorial included in this post that my daughter (Charlize Kartychok) and I (Nell Regan Kartychok) made, or gather inspiration from the fingerprint art books recommended below. When the ink or paint is dry, use a black permanent marker with an extra-fine tip to decorate thumbprints and fingerprints with faces, designs, and body parts to create different designs, including animals, dogs, cats, fish, birds, chicks, bees, turtles, snails, flowers, vegetables, fruits, fairies, dragons, suns, colorful hearts, and more to complete the fingerprint art.
Then, put a drop of clear drying glue onto the flat side of an extra large glass stone and press it onto the fingerprint art print, as shown in the video tutorial below. Allow the glue to dry before using scissors to remove excess paper around the glass stone if needed. Then, use a foam brush to paint glue onto the back of the fingerprint art and around the sides to ensure the fingerprint art is firmly attached to the stone. (This step will also help preserve the fingerprint artwork.) Finally, add a magnet to the back of the craft to complete the DIY fingerprint magnet. Please ensure the glue is dry before using it as a refrigerator magnet or giving it away as a gift.
Best Thumbprint and Fingerprint Art Books for Making DIY Magnet Crafts:
Use the creative ideas included in thumbprint and fingerprint art books to gather further inspiration to make DIY glass magnet crafts. My daughter and I looked at several books when we made our first fingerprint art magnets, but Ed Emberley’s Complete Funprint Drawing Book is our favorite. It contains two of his most popular fingerprint and thumbprint art books combined into one complete fingerprint art book for kids (or adults)!
We also loved Fingerprint Princesses and Fairies and the creative fingerprint activities in Fingerprint Monsters and Dragons by three other creative fingerprint artists. However, several more books have been published since we first created these unique fingerprint crafts. For example, this fun print book by Parima Isso, 112 Fingerprint Activities, is another excellent choice.
Each fingerprint art activity book has adorable fingerprint ideas for making fingerprint magnet crafts. Please ensure the fingerprint art you choose will fit under the glass stones you use to make them. Scroll down to watch the video tutorial and see step-by-step instructions on how to make fingerprint magnet crafts. Then, make magnets, necklaces, keychains, and more with your fingerprint art prints.

Step-By-Step Instructions For Making Fingerprint Magnets:
Here’s an easy glass magnet craft idea for kids and adults of all ages. Even toddlers and preschoolers can make these simple glass magnet crafts. Please read the instructions below so you know the steps involved and what to expect. Then, gather and prepare materials before starting this creative fingerprint craft. Next, invite kids (or adults) of all ages to use their fingertips and thumbs to create fingerprint art (or thumbprint art) to make the magnets shown in the photographs and video tutorial above with the simple step-by-step directions below:
1. Prepare the surface to make fingerprints and thumbprints:
- Choose a flat surface to make thumbprint and fingerprint art.
- Use heavyweight, bright white paper, such as cardstock, for best results.
- Thin paper can cause fingerprint ink to bleed or become so saturated with glue that it ruins the art prints.
- Optional: Trace the glass stones with a pencil and use scissors to cut them out.
- Alternatively, you can use a precision knife and a cutting mat to trace and cut paper circles or use a circle cutter to pre-cut cardstock circles to match the size of the glass gems before starting this fingerprint craft.
- I recommend pre-cutting paper circles to speed up the crafting process if you are a teacher making fingerprint magnets in the classroom.
2. Apply ink or paint to fingers or thumbs to make fingerprint art:
- Press your fingers and thumbs into an ink pad, dip your fingertips in paint (acrylic works best), or use a paintbrush (or foam brush) to paint the tip of your finger or thumb.
- As shown in the video tutorial above, my daughter and I made the fingerprint and thumbprint art included in this post with finger ink pads, but a small amount of acrylic paint also works well.
- If you use paint, please don’t use too much, or the fingerprint art can be challenging to decorate and turn into a magnet. (Gloppy paint takes a long time to dry, it is difficult to use a marker or pen to decorate, and it can create too much texture to make a magnet craft.)
- As shown in the video tutorial above, my daughter and I made the fingerprint and thumbprint art included in this post with finger ink pads, but a small amount of acrylic paint also works well.
3. Invite children (or adults) to Stamp fingerprints and Thumbprints to make art for magnet crafts:
- Use thumbs and fingertips (with paint lightly applied or ink heavily applied) to make fingerprint stamps onto the paper (or pre-cut paper circles).
- Please use bright white heavyweight paper such as cardstock for best results.
- Thin paper can cause the ink to bleed or become so saturated with glue that it ruins the art prints.
- If you use a sheet of cardstock to stamp fingerprints on instead of pre-cut circles, please ensure each fingerprint art creation is small enough to fit under the glass stones and has enough white space around it to decorate and place a glass gem to cover the art completely.
- In other words, leave an inch or two of space between each tiny fingerprint picture so there is enough room to put a glass stone over it to turn it into a refrigerator magnet.
- If you’d like to make more than thumbprint hearts and fingerprint flowers, we recommend purchasing one of the fingerprint art books recommended above.
- Reapply ink or paint as needed, using as many colors as you like to stamp prints with your fingers and thumbs.
- Allow the fingerprint stamps to dry before moving on to the next step, or the fingerprint pictures will likely smear.
4. Use an extra-fine tip black permanent marker to decorate fingerprint stamps to complete the art for magnet Crafts:
- Once the fingerprint and thumbprint stamps are dry, use a black permanent marker with an extra-fine tip to decorate them to finish the fingerprint art, as shown in the video tutorial above.
- Draw simple doodles and designs to turn fingerprints into different kinds of animals, fruits, vegetables, and objects, such as puppy dogs, bunny rabbits, cats, birds, baby chicks, snails, turtles, fish, pumpkins, apples, decorated suns, fairies, dragons, monsters, witches, and other fun characters.
- Or make simple faces on thumbprint hearts like my daughter did on these necklace charms and pendant crafts.
- Again, copy the ideas in this post, or get one of the books recommended above for several more creative fingerprint art ideas.
5. Glue the fingerprint art (or thumbprint art) to the glass gem:
- Place a drop of clear drying glue or adhesive on the back or flat side of the glass gem and glue it directly onto the fingerprint art.
- The fingerprint art craft supply list includes several types of glues and adhesives you can use.
- I don’t recommend using a hot glue gun to make these crafts because hot glue does not adhere well to glass over time and will likely break.
- A small drop of glue goes a long way, so you don’t need much.
- Please use caution; too much glue can cause the fingerprint or thumbprint art to smear.
- Press the glass gem firmly to distribute the glue evenly under the stone and remove any air bubbles.
- Allow the glue to dry before moving on to the next step.
- Overnight is best, but several hours will do in a pinch.
- Or, learn how to make a necklace or keychain with your fingerprint art creations!
6. Cut away the remaining paper around the glass gem if needed:
- Use small detail scissors (or big kid scissors for crafts) to trim and cut away any excess paper around the glass gem. It doesn’t need to be perfect.
- If any paper lifts away from the glass gem, you can glue it down again in the next step.
- This step might not be necessary if you pre-cut cardstock circles in step one, but they will often need a snip or two to clean up the edges.
7. Glue the magnet to the back of the glass gem with the fingerprint art (or thumbprint art) attached:
- Use a foam brush to paint clear drying glue or adhesive over the paper on the back of the glass gem.
- Paint along the edge of the paper and glass gem to ensure the edges are firmly attached and preserve the artwork, as shown in the DIY fingerprint magnet video tutorial above.
- We recommend using a foam brush to spread the glue or adhesive over the back of the fingerprint art to preserve and firmly secure the artwork for the best results.
- Glue and adhesives will ruin a regular paintbrush.
- We recommend using a foam brush to spread the glue or adhesive over the back of the fingerprint art to preserve and firmly secure the artwork for the best results.
- Attach a small ceramic magnet to the back of the artwork to finish the fingerprint magnet crafts.
- Allow the fingerprint art glass magnets to dry completely before using them as magnets or giving them away as personalized gifts.

I can’t find where to buy the glass gems. They are no longer available on your link to amazon
Okay, thanks, Rachel. I will try to find a new link but they are selling out fast because this post is so popular! They can sometimes be found at the dollar store and can be purchased at most craft stores. They are called glass gems, flat back marbles, table scatter, or floral stones.
Hi there! I have 2 questions: 1. it says we need extra-large clear glass gems AND clear glass cabochons. Is this the same thing? Are either/or ok to use? 2. Is the Mod Podge what you use to secure the glass to the paper AND also what you use to secure the magnet?
Thank you!
Hi Rachel, good questions… Sorry for not making the instructions clear enough to understand.
1. Yes, clear glass gems and clear glass cabochons can both be used and are basically the same thing. Glass gems are not perfectly shaped while cabochons are usually made into perfect oval and circular shapes. We used the large glass gems to make the fingerprint magnets pictured in this post, and glass cabochons that came with silver trays to make fingerprint necklaces. Glass gems are also called flat-backed marbles, flat-backed floral stones, or flat-backed table scatter. I hope that helps!
2. Yes, we used Mod Podge both to secure the glass gem to the paper and, painted it onto the back of the paper to attach the magnet. I have heard from other readers that they have had just as much success with white PVC glue, but have not tried it myself.
Happy fingerprint magnet crafting!!
Nell
I updated the link but you are right Rachel, they are selling out fast! I don’t know how long the new link I have provided will have stock left–act fast!
Dollar Tree has them
Walmart carries them or Hobby Lobby.
Where did you purchase the clear gem glass? This is an adorable.
Hi Elizabeth! There is a link to purchase the glass gems otherwise known as flat back marbles in the supplies section above! You can also find them at the dollar store if you are lucky… but usually, they are smaller and not clear. They can also be found at craft stores and at some florists. They are also called table scatter or floral stones. I hope that helps!
What kind of paper was used to put thumbprints on?
Good question, Rose!
Bright white heavyweight printer paper drawing paper or cardstock works great. Just make sure the ink dries before you glue the glass gem to the fingerprint art.
Hola buenas tardes disculpa en donde podría comprar las burbujas de plástico o como se piden gracias están muy bonitas
I’m sorry Mary, I do not understand what you have writen. Could you write it in English?
Step 2 is confusing. It states to glue a magnet on top of the thumbprint art, is that right? I thought we glued the glass gem on top. Can you please explain ?
I’m sorry Peggy! I just read it over and your right, it was totally confusing and shouldn’t have even been written in that step. I have edited it to fix it. I hope it makes more sense now. Please let me know if you are still confused. 🙂
Hi,
I am an English teacher at KSTU and i live in Kazakhstan. Where can i get glass magnets?
Thank you for your post anyway!!!
Is it safe to use ink pads on kids fingers? Age 2 and 5 yrs. Want to make sure before I do it. Thank you, I love this project!!!
Yes, Judy! They are non-toxic and designed for little fingers and thumbs!
Hi Samal!
They are available at some dollar stores and most craft stores. Good luck!
I am working on making examples for my K art class and I am running into a problem. When I put a drop of clear glue on the bottom of the glass tile and then place the thumbprint art on it, the artwork sticks. However, the artwork looks smudgy/blotchy when I look at it through the glass (and I should add that the glass is unblemished). How do you prevent the dot of clear glue from messing up the kids’ thumbprint artwork?
Hi Anna!
Great questions. We have learned a few things that might help.
First, we have found that waiting until the ink is dry to the touch is a must or it will smudge when the glue is placed on top.
Second, we have only used and tested Mod Podge and are unsure about which other glues will and won’t work.
Third, a small drop goes a long way. Press it down firmly to spread the glue and remove air bubbles. Too much glue can cause it to smear!
Fourth, use a heavyweight bright white paper for best results. Thin paper can cause the ink to bleed.
Last, even when you follow all of these tips they will look a bit smeared and unclear until the glue (Mod Podge) dries.
I hope that helps!!
Hi! I’m excited to make the magnets! I’m wondering if anyone has a brand of magnets or has a link for them on Amazon. I have no stores nearby so will be ordering them, and I would love a recommendation! Thank you!
Hi Jenny! All of our recommendations to make fingerprint magnets, including the magnets themselves, can be found in the supplies section in the post. We provide Amazon links to make it easy 🙂
Hi – the link to buy the magnets is no longer valid. Can you provide another link? Thanks!
Thank you for letting me know! I have fixed the link to the magnets. We used 1-inch ceramic magnets for our fingerprint art.
Nell
hi, this craft was AWSOME and worked so well! I was just looking for a Christmas present for my parents and then i saw this and i wanted to do it but it looked so hard but then i tried it and realized that it was not hard and was super fun and looks amazing!
Hi Chloe! I’m so glad that you decided to give this fingerprint magnet craft a try, and I’m so glad that you found it easy! I agree, they look amazing and like they take a lot more effort to make than they actually do. I hope your parents loved them!
Nell
I just made a few to test out with the exact supplies you suggested. The next day when I cut them away from the paper the glue peeled away from the paper/glass immediately. Any tips?
Hi Kate,
Did you wash the glass gems before gluing them to the fingerprint art? Sometimes they are sold with a slight residue on them that can affect the glue. Other than that, I have never heard of anyone ever having any issues with fingerprint magnets coming apart. Let me know how it goes!
Hi there! Can we use regular paint for the finger prints? Or does this only work with the ink pads?
Hi Alice,
Yes, I would imagine that other types of paint will work just as well to make these fingerprint magnet crafts. Just make sure that the prints are not too thick or gloppy (if you know what I mean–lol), and you allow the paint to dry completely before gluing the fingerprint art to the glass gems. Good luck, and let us know how it goes!
Nell
Hello.
Is there a video link for the fingerprint magnets? Can’t seem to find it anywhere.
Hi Lynn,
