How to Make a Flower Crown with Fake Flowers:
Have you ever wondered how to make a flower crown? If so, the step-by-step flower crown DIY tutorial below makes it easy for kids or adults to fashion a gorgeous flower headpiece perfect for May Day, a spring faire, a wedding celebration, the summer solstice, summer camp, a birthday party favor, or another festival or special event any time of year—because it’s made with faux flowers!
My daughter and I learned how to make flower crowns with felt roses using the technique described below at a May Day festival at the Waldorf school back in 2016. I’m not sure who came up with the idea, but I’m sure it was one of the fantastic teachers who worked at Blue Oak Charter School in Chico, CA, at that time. That day, my daughter and I learned how to make flower crowns from felt scraps rolled into rose shapes.
Since then, we’ve made these beautiful flower crafts with all sorts of fake and faux flowers using the same, or another version of a twisted floral wire crown. As you can see in the photographs throughout this flower crown craft tutorial, they have all turned out beautifully and look gorgeous on girls, boys, men, and women alike! Just look at how pretty a few of the floral crowns I’ve made look on my daughter in the photographs below. The colors, materials, and floral arrangements you choose can drastically change the look of these simple crafts.
Faux Flower Crowns for Kids and Adults:
Kids and adults of all ages can create flower crowns at home, in the classroom, at a birthday party, at fairs, or at summer camp using the step-by-step how-to instructions and flower crown DIY video tutorial below. Fake flower crowns can serve many purposes and make a lovely fashion accessory for several occasions.
Unlike real-flower crowns, fake-flower crowns are designed to last. Although flower crowns made with fresh flowers are gorgeous, those made with faux flowers offer greater durability and longevity than their fresh counterparts. This ensures your creation will remain intact and vibrant for years. They’re also hypoallergenic, making them ideal for individuals with sensitivities to pollen or certain flowers.Â
DIY Flower Crowns Made with Fresh Flowers:
Benefits of fake flower crowns aside, handmade flower crowns made with fresh flowers are especially gorgeous because they are real, lush, and fragrant. While felt flower crowns made with this easy DIY tutorial are made to last, real flower crowns are a beautiful option that fake flowers can never replace. If you prefer to use real flowers, look through this list of flower nature crafts for a few ways to make fresh flower crowns.

FElt Flower Crown DIY Craft Materials and Recommendations:
Please read the step-by-step flower crown instructions before gathering the craft supplies recommended below. Doing so will make it easier for you to choose the flower crown materials you want to use. I also recommend using a glue gun with glue sticks to make flower crowns because the glue dries quickly enough to put the crown on immediately.
That said, glue guns are hot and dangerous tools. When making flower crowns with kids, especially young children such as toddlers and preschoolers. Please ensure they are supervised and know how to use a hot glue gun safely.
You can also use craft glue, tacky glue pen, or glue dots to make flower crowns with kids, but please ensure the glue is dry before placing the fake flower crown on someone’s head if you use either of those alternatives. Another thing you can do is add a bit of felt (or another type of fabric) to the inside of the crown, on the side opposite the craft glue or glue dot, to ensure it doesn’t stick to anything.
DIY Flower Crown Craft Supplies:
- Floral wire (bind or vine wire covered with paper)
- Scissors or wire nippers (cutting floral wire will dull regular scissors)
- Hot glue, glue dots, a tacky glue pen, or craft glue
- Multicolored ribbons (optional but recommended)
- Soft measuring tape (optional)
- Fabric marker (optional)
- Faux flowers with and without leaves (choose at least one of the fake flower craft options below, or make your own by using fabric scissors to cut flower shapes from felt or rolling felt scraps into a rose shape. Each of these options is included in the step-by-step DIY flower crown tutorial below.):
Faux Flower and Leaf Options for Making Flower Crowns:
Fabric flowers go in and out of stock, and what you find in one craft store may not be the same as what you find at a different hobby store, Amazon, etc. Use what you have, or what most fits the theme of the party or event that you are making the DIY flower crowns for.
- Small Felt Flowers (I used these to make the flower crown in the video tutorial below.)
- Felt flower embellishments with leaves
- Felt roses; 3D rosettes
- Assorted felt flowers for crafts
- Felt flowers and succulents kit
- Red and pink rose die-cut applique flowers
- Blue, yellow, and cream roses die-cut appliques
- Pink, yellow, and cream die-cut applique rosettes
- Satin ribbon roses (These are tiny)
- Or use other faux flowers of choice:
- You can find fake flowers at Dollar Stores, Dollar Tree Stores, or your favorite local craft or hobby store.
- Faux leaves (optional):
- Small 2-sided padded velvet felt green leaves
- Fake fabric leaves
- Assorted fabric leaves
DIY Flower Crown Step-By-Step Craft Tutorial:
This step-by-step tutorial teaches how to make fake flower crowns with faux flowers crafted from felt, satin, silk, and other fabrics. There are several ways to make a flower crown with different faux flowers. Try the variations included in the directions below. Please read the step-by-step flower crown DIY instructions before getting started.
Doing so will help you understand how to fashion a fake flower crown and each step involved. Understanding the steps before starting this flower craft will also make it easier to choose the materials you want to use. I also recommend watching the step-by-step DIY flower crown video tutorial posted below the directions before starting these flower crafts. 1. Cut a section of floral wire for the headband or crown:
- Please note that the floral bind wire recommended in the craft supplies above has several color options, including the light coffee wire shown in the photographs and video tutorial.
- You can also purchase brown, deep green, red, and white for the floral headband.
- All color options look gorgeous when made into flower crowns. Choose the floral bind wire in the color that suits your needs, the occasion, or what you like best!
- Use scissors (or wire snippers) to cut two and a half to three feet of the floral wire covered in paper.
- Depending on the size of the flower crown, you might need to cut a little more or less than three feet.
- For example, a baby or toddler will most likely need less, while an adult with a large head circumference may need more.
2. Twist the floral wire into a crown, headdress, or headband sized to fit the wearer:
- Fold the section of floral wire cut in step one in half.
- Place two fingers between the floral bind wire at the fold.
- Wrap the floral wire around both fingers and twist it 2-3 times to create the first loop, as shown in the flower crown DIY video tutorial below.
- Remove your fingers and place them on the other side of the first twist or loop.
- Again, wrap the floral wire around two fingers and twist it 2-3 times.
- Please watch the flower crown video tutorial below to see these steps in action.
- Make more loops by twisting the floral wire around your fingers until you reach the desired crown length.
- Measure the wearer’s head circumference with a soft measuring tape, or use the floral wire crown itself to estimate the size needed to make the crown.
- Once the crown is the desired length, place the two free ends of the floral wire through the first loop and twist them between the first and last loops to fasten and finish, as shown in the video tutorial below.
- And finally, cut away the remaining floral wire.
- Alternatively, twist two or more strands of floral wire tightly together to create a thick single strand for the floral crown.
3. Prepare Flowers (If Needed) for the Crown:
- If you are not using premade flowers, this is a great time to get them ready, especially if you need to cut them from felt or another fabric. Alternatively, you can prepare them before twisting the wire to make the crown.
- To make fabric rosettes, cut felt scraps into thin, long isosceles triangles to roll into roses. Then, in step 5 below, roll each fabric scrap into a rose, attach it to the headpiece with glue, and stick it onto the floral crown.
- Alternatively, you can print flower clip art onto cardstock, cut around the outline of each flower to remove it from the paper. Next, use a fabric marker to trace the flower templates to make as many flowers as desired. Or, simply use the fabric marker with disappearing ink to draw flower shapes directly onto the fabric.
4. Cut ribbons (if desired) for the floral headpiece:
- Cut lengths of ribbon for the homemade flower crown if desired. Use only a few ribbons or colors, as many as you like, or none at all.
- Please choose colors that match, complement, or contrast with the flowers, as shown in the flower crown photographs for this post and in the DIY video tutorial below.
- You can cut ribbons as long or as short as you like, depending on the person’s size, hair length, and preference.
- I cut most of the ribbons for the flower crowns in the photographs, 1.5 to 2.5 feet long, and they looked lovely!
- Tie the ribbons with a knot at one end to make them easier to attach as a single unit, or leave them separate depending on style and preference.
5. Glue felt, satin, or other faux flowers to the flower crown:
Please read the instructions and tips below before attaching any flowers to the headpiece:
- Determine how you would like to arrange the felt, satin, or faux flowers on the DIY crown.
- One way to make a felt flower crown is to glue a flower to each twist point in the floral wire crown, as shown in the video tutorial below.
- Depending on the type and size of your fake flowers, you can also glue them to the crown headpiece in any way that looks good. Some larger faux flowers, for example, look best sitting inside the floral wire loops and glued accordingly.
- It’s also lovely to make a felt flower crown with the blooms at the front of the headpiece and bare in the back, with only ribbons hanging down, if desired.
- Choose the method you like best, or try different floral arrangements.
- Gluing a flower over or on the final twist point in the floral wire headpiece to secure it is a great place to start attaching the faux flowers to the crown.
- After making several felt flower crowns, my daughter and I have learned that it’s easier to attach ribbons beneath one of the flowers as you work, before gluing it to the twisted floral wire headpiece, than to do so after the crown is completed.
- In other words, it’s best to glue the ribbons to the headpiece underneath one of the felt flowers before it’s completed, but you can do it afterward if you prefer or forget. So, this is also something to consider before getting started.
- Adding felt leaves is optional, but it looks gorgeous on some felt flower crowns, as shown in the photographs of my daughter wearing the blue felt flower crown with green leaves.
5. Attach ribbons to the flower crown if not attached in step four (optional):
- If not completed in a previous step, glue or tie colorful ribbons to the back of the homemade flower crown.
- As mentioned in step four above, I recommend gluing the ribbons to the flower crown underneath one (or more) of the fake flowers so they hang between the flower and the headpiece.
- You can also bunch them together and glue them to the inside of the floral wire headpiece or tie them around the crown, however you wish.
- In the photograph of her below, you can see an example of a flower crown my daughter made with ribbons attached. The ribbons are glued between the blue flower and the floral headband.
