Scroll down to learn how to create a Halloween front porch display with the decoration ideas and the simple step-by-step DIY decor tutorial below. The instructions below provide a general guideline to help you create a Halloween display featuring skeletons, spiders, and spider webs. Please use the guidelines below to create outdoor skeleton decorations that will impress your neighbors and make children squeal with horror and delight.
1. Make a DIY Giant Spider Web or Hang a Pre-Made Giant Outdoor Spider Web:
- Use our giant Halloween spider web DIY tutorial to make an outdoor spider web with sticks or bamboo poles.
- Alternatively, purchase the outdoor spider web decorations recommended in the supplies above or at the bottom of this post.
- Or, attach a spider web coming from a 12-foot giant skeleton’s arm like Spider-Man in your front yard.
2. Arrange spiders in the giant outdoor spider web:
- Decorate the giant outdoor spider web with various spiders from small to extra large.
- Wrap and bend the legs of the spider decoration around the rope web to attach it.
- Put large hairy spiders with glowing eyes onto the giant outdoor spider web, the front door, and all over the front porch.
- Another idea is to arrange creepy-crawly spiders on the door.
- Here are a few spider Halloween decoration ideas for your spider web:
3. Position the skeleton(s) on the porch or in the front yard:
- Place a skeleton in a black rocking chair
, a folding chair
, or on a bale of straw
near or behind the giant Halloween spider web.
- Another idea is to wrap the life-sized skeleton in a spider web, as shown in the photo collage below.
- To do so, wrap it in a stretchy spider web, gauze bandage roll, or creepy gauze fabric, and hang it from the ceiling or in the giant spider web. (A gauze bandage is shown in the photo collage below)
- Or hang a Halloween corpse decoration next to it.
- The primary idea behind the spider web and skeleton Halloween theme is to make it appear as though the spider(s) have already had a delicious meal, and the onlooker may be next!
- Alternatively, position skeletons in silly or playful positions such as grilling on a barbecue, practicing yoga, or riding bikes, etc.
- Dress them in costumes, hats, or sunglasses to match your theme or reflect your family’s sense of humor if desired.
- Update: Since this post was first published, Home Depot introduced its giant 12-foot skeleton decorations in 2020. Now you can add a giant Skelly to your festive outdoor Halloween decor! Build and stand the giant skeleton in your front yard. Attach a spider web coming from its arm like Spider-Man. Alternatively, put large hairy spiders crawling all over it. Or, decorate it with spiders and spider webs.

4. Place the howling dog or wolf skeleton next to the skeleton or below the Spider Web (optional):
- A howling wolf or dog skeleton
looks frightfully fun sitting beside the skeleton in the chair behind the spider web on our front porch. It would look equally fantastic sitting in the front yard.
- As mentioned previously, my daughter has been obsessed with skeletons since her first Halloween.
- A lovely couple we met while camping, when she was three, gave her the howling dog skeleton in the photographs after seeing how much she enjoyed it. It was sitting on the edge of their campground, and she loved to ask if she could make it howl when we walked by, and wanted to sit and play with it for hours. They called it Bones, and we decided to keep the name because it fits perfectly.
- My daughter loves to hide on the front porch and make Bones howl when an unsuspecting onlooker walks by. Beware, or you might be next!
5. Add more spider webs (optional):
- Arrange creepy gauze cloth or stretchy spider webs throughout the scene once your Halloween skeleton decorations are hung on the front porch.
- It can also be fun to wrap the skeletons and other props with the creepy gauze fabric, stretchy spider web (optional). The idea is to make the skeletons resemble the spider that wrapped them up in its web.
- Update: Since first publishing this Halloween decorations tutorial, I have learned that stretchy spider web is hazardous for birds, insects, and other wildlife. While you’ll see it in the pictures before I knew better, you won’t see it now. Today, I use rope to make a giant outdoor spider web, and creepy cloth for our DIY decor instead. Please, use stretchy spider web sparingly, if at all, in areas where birds don’t fly. Thank you!
Boo, Who Stole Our Skelly?
My daughter has been obsessed with posable skeletons of all sizes since she was a toddler. I don’t know what her fascination with them and Halloween pumpkins is all about, but she’s loved them since she first saw them in our neighbors’ Halloween decor displays before she could walk. When she was two, she whined until I bought her a small 18-inch skeleton, which she wanted to keep as a doll. She affectionately called it Skelly. This was not a seasonal toy for her; she played with it year-round until it lost one of its legs due to overuse a few years later.
Her father finally replaced it with a larger four-foot poseable skeleton doll, which my daughter pleaded with him to buy. She also named it Skelly, but it was stolen the same year. It was the skeleton we first used to create the Halloween display with skeletons and spiders in the photographs. So my husband decided to replace it with a poseable life-sized skeleton. Believe it or not, the Skelly in the original pictures for this tutorial was the third Halloween skeleton he purchased for our outdoor Halloween display that year (2019).
My husband tied the third skeleton we bought to the chair and column on the front porch to prevent it from being stolen! Look at how many zip ties my husband wrapped around the dog’s leg in the photo above! He even tied a cowbell on the back of Skelly’s head to alert our dog (and us) if anyone ever tries to steal it again—lol! Update 2021: Today, you can purchase a giant 12-foot skeleton, which, believe it or not, is named Skelly (which has been my daughter’s name for her favorite skeleton toys since she was a toddler) and is much more challenging to steal!
6. Add Optional scary outdoor Halloween decorations and cute Halloween porch decoration ideas:
- Add any other outdoor Halloween decorations or Halloween door decor
to your Halloween porch decor or front yard display
that you like.
- My family carved a few cute Jack-o’-Lanterns, added a string of pumpkin lights
, and made an extra-large Halloween ghost decoration to hang on the opposite side of the front porch.
- Another fun idea is to make and hang spider egg sacs all over the front porch or place Halloween tombstones
and skeletons
coming out of the ground in the front yard or sticking out of garden beds! Scroll down for more ideas if you’re interested in making a skeleton graveyard in your front yard.
- Today, our whole neighborhood has joined the spiderweb and skelly fun. Spiders, skeletons, ghouls, ghosts, monsters, and their gnashing teeth, as well as a few minions, are taking over the entire neighborhood for Halloween this year.
- Below is a picture of another one of my family’s front porch skeleton and spider web displays.

Create a Skeleton Graveyard in Your Front Yard:
Another popular idea that looks fantastic in combination with outdoor spider web and skeleton decorations is a skeleton graveyard. Create a skeleton graveyard in your front yard using life-sized skeletons, fake body parts, skulls, tombstones, fog machines, and dim lighting to craft a chilling cemetery scene.
Position skeletons (or parts of skeletons, such as skeleton arms) crawling out of the ground, lounging against headstones, or climbing trees to create the illusion that they’re coming back to life. For extra effect, use motion-activated sound boxes to play sudden creaks, groans, spooky Halloween music, or sinister laughter to surprise passersby.
