Fingerprint Christmas Lights Christmas Tree Cards Step-by-Step Instructions
Before starting this easy Christmas craft project, please read the step-by-step fingerprint Christmas tree card tutorial to understand the steps and what to expect. The step-by-step DIY video tutorial showing how to make fingerprint Christmas lights on cards is posted below these written instructions. You might also enjoy Fun Family Traditions for a Magical Holiday.
1. Prepare Christmas tree-shaped template:
- Draw a Christmas tree, trace a cookie cutter
, or get access to and print these free Christmas tree templates onto cardstock
.
- Trace the Christmas tree-shaped cookie cutter several times, or print Christmas tree-shaped templates onto several pages of cardstock
, depending on the number of cards you want to make.
- Cardstock works better than regular paper because it creates a lovely, thick Christmas tree-shaped template sturdy enough for kids to decorate with fingerprint Christmas lights.
- As the printable demonstrates, you can draw or trace approximately 4-5 Christmas trees per sheet of cardstock. Draw, trace, or print the number of Christmas tree shapes you need to match the number of cards you want to make.
- Because the printable has four Christmas trees, printing one page will create four templates, totaling four Fingeprint Christmas tree cards.
- Finally, cut out each Christmas tree shape before moving on to the next step.
2. Cut Christmas trees for fingerprint light cards:
- Use precision detail scissors to cut out the Christmas tree-shaped templates for this fingerprint lights craft.
- Cutting with scissors to cut out Christmas tree shapes is an excellent way for younger children and older adults to exercise the fine motor muscles of the hand.
- With screen use increasing, fine motor activities are more important now than ever!
3. Use a fine-tip permanent marker to draw a light string on each Christmas tree cutout to make fingerprint Christmas lights:
- For best results, use a fine-tip black permanent marker to make the light string for the fingerprint lights on Christmas cards. (An extra-fine-tip permanent marker will create a too-thin line for this Christmas craft.)
- It’s easy to draw by hand without a fingerprint Christmas lights template. Use the following instructions:
- Move the pen in swirls and squiggles as you draw a line from the top to the bottom of the Christmas tree to create a baseline for the string of fingerprint lights.
- As you draw down the Christmas tree, move your Christmas light string from side to side (left to right), similar to how you would wrap a real evergreen tree with Christmas lights.
- Creating this simple fingerprint Christmas light template with markers makes it easy for children to decorate the light strand with stamped fingerprint lights.

4. Invite children to decorate the fingerprint Christmas lights craft:
- Invite your children to dip their fingers into acrylic or tempera paint to stamp fingerprint light bulbs on the Christmas tree cutouts.
- My daughter used tempera paint to make the fingerprint Christmas lights in the photographs for this tutorial, but acrylic paint also works well to dot bulbs.
- Toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergarten students can stamp their index finger or thumb into the paint to create the light bulbs, while teens and adults can use their pinkie fingers to make fingerprint Christmas lights.
- An alternative to a child’s finger and fingertips is to use a cotton swab or a pencil eraser to make the Christmas tree bulbs
- Dip the swab or eraser into the paint and then onto the paper.
- My daughter used red, green, yellow, orange, blue, and purple tempera paint
to make the fingerprint Christmas lights craft shown in the photographs.
- She liked to use her pinky finger to make this Christmas craft because it made the cutest little fingerprint Christmas lights.
- Be sure to have wipes
or a wet washcloth nearby so you can quickly wipe your fingers and use multiple colors.
- Watch the video below to see how my daughter made our fingerprint Christmas light cards with one color at a time.
5. To complete this Christmas craft, glue Christmas trees with fingerprint lights to the front of Christmas cards or colored cardstock:
- Invite children to glue each fingerprint light Christmas tree to the front of a festive-colored blank Holiday greeting card. Follow the simple directions below:
- Flip each Christmas tree over and rub glue on the back with a glue stick
.
- Then flip the fingerprint lights Christmas tree over and glue it to the front of a blank greeting card or a piece of colored cardstock to complete the Christmas craft, as shown in the video craft tutorial.
- Flip each Christmas tree over and rub glue on the back with a glue stick
