Update: We have had our DIY fairy house painted rocks placed out in our yard and garden for a little over a year now and so far the paint has not run in the rain, nor have they begun to fade from sun exposure.
Many of the bark roofs that we made for our fairy house craft, however, have had to be replaced. We have also discovered that using paint pens to paint roofs, instead of using tree bark, make fairy garden houses just as magical.

We have also included a DIY fairy house video tutorial that makes it easy to learn how to make a fairy house. You can find it below the written fairy house craft directions.
Step 1 – Gather materials to make fairy garden houses.
First, go on a nature hunt for some rocks or stones that will work to make painted rocks into fairy garden houses.
Collect rocks or stones that sit nicely and look like a fairy house. Look for squared or rounded rocks with a flat edge. Rocks that have a flat edge that they can sit upon turn into a beautiful DIY fairy house.
You will also need to find some tree bark, leaves, wood chips, moss or any other type of material that you can use to make a roof for a fairy house.
If you can not find any natural materials that will work, try some pieces of construction paper cut in odd shapes. Or, simply use paint pens
to paint a roof onto each fairy house.
Step 2 – Use a paint pen to draw a door and windows on each rock fairy house.
Paint pens make it super easy to make painted rock crafts like these fairy houses. Draw a door on your fairy house, and small windows in any shape that you like. Don’t worry about making them neat… crooked windows and doors add character to each fairy house!
My daughter and I found it super quick and easy to paint doors, windows, and even roofs onto rocks to make a DIY fairy house! Some fairy garden houses take forever to make, while these beauties can be made in a matter of minutes.
Step 3 – Glue (or paint) a roof onto painted rocks to complete the fairy house craft.
There is no need to create perfect painted rocks with perfect roofs. Crooked, odd, and misshapen fairy house roofs all add to the character of each DIY fairy house. Get creative and have fun making fairy garden houses!
As mentioned in the update above, we have had our DIY fairy house painted rocks placed out in our yard and garden for a little over a year now and so far the paint has not run in the rain, nor have they begun to fade from sun exposure.
Many of the bark roofs that we made for our fairy house craft, however, have had to be replaced. We have also discovered that using paint pens to paint roofs, instead of using tree bark, make fairy garden houses just as magical.
