Step 1 – Cut a strip of flexible plastic to create a separate container for succulents (optional)
We wanted to create a separate container for our beach fairy garden in order to keep the sand separate from the succulents so our daughter could play with the sand without disturbing the plants.
This can also be important if you will be planting succulents directly into the mini beach garden, and you don’t want the sand and soil to mix, but it is not mandatory. Beach mini-gardens can be just as lovely when the soil and sand inhabit the same space.
If you would like to create a separate container to plant the succulents (or put the succulents in their planter pots into), find some recycled flexible plastic to use to create a barrier. We cut a strip from an old poly notebook cover.
Once you find something suitable to use, cut a strip 3 1/2 inches tall by 8 to 12 inches long.
The length will depend on the amount of space that your succulent plants need. We recommend using 1 to 3 succulent plants.
Step 2 – Attach the plastic strip to the inside of the tabletop tray (optional)
Use flex tape or duct tape to attach the strip of flexible plastic to the inside of the tabletop tray with handles. We taped both side edges and the bottom edge and made sure that sand could not seep through any of the crevices.
If you will be planting succulents directly into the mini garden container, we recommend using flex tape because it is waterproof.
Step 3 – Place or plant succulents in the fairy garden
Place succulents in planters directly into the tabletop garden, or plant succulents into the fairy garden.
We placed succulents in planters into the separate container that we made with a strip of recycled plastic from an old notebook. You can also plant them directly into the planter.
Because we choose to add the succulents to the miniature garden in their pots, we added a single layer of pebbles underneath them to help keep them aerated and leave a little room for water to drain and evaporate.
If you choose to plant your succulents directly into the beach fairy garden, use a good organic potting soil specifically designed for succulents for best results.
Step 4 – Add Pebbles and/or Shells
Sprinkle pebbles, medium seashells, and small seashells around the succulent plants to cover the soil.
We also squeezed pebbles into the crevasses between the succulents in their pots to keep them stable and add structure.
Step 5 – Add Sand and/or Marbles and Glass Gems
Scoop as much play sand into the beach fairy garden that you would like it to have. Less is best, especially if you have young children at home that will be playing with it.
Step 6 – Trim and Place Fairy Garden Fence
Use wire nippers or cutters to trim the fairy garden fence to size.
We placed the fence along the edge of the plastic that we used to divide our miniature beach garden. It can also be placed along or around the inside edge of the planter, or weave and meander in any way that makes your beach fairy garden come to life.
Step 7 – Add Fairy Garden Beach Accessories
Last, and best of all, add the fairy garden beach accessories to your miniature tabletop garden that makes your heart sing and your children shout with joy.
Include any combination of mixed blue cabochons, blue marbles, and/or blue pebbles to make “water.” Or keep your beach high and dry with zen gardening tools instead.

Another easy option is to use blue play sand instead of regular play sand to make a mermaid fairy garden, or, any combination of mixed blue cabochons, blue marbles, and/or blue pebbles to make “water” for the mermaid figurines to play in instead of a “beach.”
When mermaid mini gardens are made with blue play sand or pebbles; a short glass cylinder vase, slant terrarium, small decorative bowl, small tabletop ceramic planter, etc., can be used in place of the tabletop tray with handles pictured.
If you chose one of the different mermaid fairy garden container ideas listed above, you may also prefer to use air plants in your mini garden instead of succulents, or none at all. You can also make a mermaid small world without any plants at all!
Mermaid Small World
A small world is a lot like a fairy garden without the plants. They are mini-scenes filled with sensory play materials and mermaid figurines for children to play with and develop the imagination.
Like a fairy garden, a small world is made for children to play with and enjoy, or, imagine into as a way to develop creativity and focus while learning through play.
The only difference between a mermaid small world and a mermaid fairy garden is that a small world usually does not contain live plants as a fairy garden would. However, a fairy garden is considered a type of small world that can be used for small world play.
