How to Make Red, White, and Blue Ribbon Wands with a Star
Star wands with red, white and blue ribbons are fun 4th of July crafts and patriotic party favors!
Patriotic Star Wand Step by Step Tutorial
Step 1 – Trace and Cut Felt Stars
- Use a star-shaped cookie cutter and a fabric marker with disappearing ink to trace stars onto the back of glimmer felt.
- You will need two stars for each magic wand.
- The ink will disappear in about 12-24 hours, or use water to remove it. Yes, it even works on white felt!
Step 2 – Cut Red, White, and Blue Ribbons
- Cut six 12 – 14 in sections of red, white, and blue ribbons.
- We used two of each color for each wand.
- Arrange the red, white, and blue ribbons in the color order you like.
- Check out the photo collage below to see how we made ours.
Step 3 – Attach Red, White, and Blue Ribbons
- Use a low-temperature glue gun to attach the red, white, and blue ribbons to the inside bottom edge of each of the felt stars.
- Add a dab of glue to each ribbon, and attach them to the inside bottom edge of the star.
Step 4 – Glue Wooden Dowl to the Inside of the Felt Star
- Place a wooden dowel on one-half of each felt star pair, and glue it to the bottom middle inside edge of the felt star.
- Look at the star wand photo tutorial below to see exactly how to glue the wooden dowel inside each felt star pair.
Step 5 – Glue Felt Star Pairs Together with Ribbons and Dowel Inside
Next, glue each star wand together. Follow the steps below:
- Match the felt stars up for the best fit.
- If using glimmer felt, make sure the glimmer side of the felt is facing out before gluing the star wand together.
- Glue the star halves together with the wooden dowel and ribbons inside.
Step 6 – Glue Silver Tinsel Cord to the Outside Edge of Each Star Wand (optional)
- Glue silver tinsel cord to the outside edge of each patriotic star wand.
- Adding a silver tinsel cord to the outside edge of each star wand gives them a clean and professional look.
- Please use caution: glue guns are hot and dangerous tools. Children should NOT complete this step without adult supervision–if at all.
- We started on the star’s backside and worked it around to the front.
- To finish, cut and glue a small section of silver tinsel cord to the part of the star that needs it on the back.
NOTE: If you decide to add a silver tinsel cord, it is almost impossible not to touch the glue and get it all over your fingers. You must use a low-temperature glue gun or a glue gun with a low-temperature setting
. High-temperature glue can burn–please use caution!
