What Happens When Children Have their own Homemade Cleaning Supplies?
When were about to do a project on our outdoor art table, I told my daughter that I needed to grab something and would be right back.
As I walked back outside with my cleaning supplies, I was shocked to find her already busy cleaning the outdoor art table!
I was taken aback for a second as I thought, how did this happen? And then I realized how strong our daily rhythm and household habits are.
Good Habits Start at Home
Before we use our outdoor art table, I always clean it. Because my daughter sees me do this before we use it, every single time we use it, she grabbed her cleaning kit for kids.
I’m glad that I did not tell her where I was going. Otherwise, I may have missed this small miracle!
I was shocked and proud even though I knew this behavior was not unusual at all. She was just doing what she sees mommy do, just like any other kid.
Did I teach her how to clean?
Nope. She learned by watching the patterns of the adults around her.
Did she clean the table perfectly?
Nope. Not even close.
Did I discourage her, or tell her that she did it wrong?
Absolutely not! I praised her efforts and helped her finish cleaning the outdoor table.
Before I knew it, the praise I gave her earned me an eager helper.
Once I began to set up the art project, she grabbed her natural window cleaner and got to work on the dirty windows on the french doors behind us. True story.
Afterward, she proceeded to go all around the house cleaning windows and mirrors. So much for our art project!
She absolutely loved washing the windows. She loved it so much, she would not stop until she emptied the bottle of glass cleaner in her cleaning kit.
I couldn’t have been more thrilled, and, of course, I was happy to show her how to make more window cleaning solution. The natural ingredients used in it make it safe and easy.

This is such an adorable idea! My little one loves to help me clean. And even though I use method cleaners, I still don’t like her being around harsh chemicals. She’d love if I pulled this little basket out for her to help with cleaning. 🙂 Thank you!
You’re welcome – so glad you like it 🙂 My daughter just pulled hers out today and asked if she could clean things. Of course you can!!
This is such a great idea! Love it!My boys also like to help me “clean” the windows. For one thing they spend a lot of time outside playing with their spray bottles and then my oldest learned at school (he goes to a Montessori) to clean windows and is eager to show off. You can hardly look through our windows now that they’re helping but that’s another story. They use plain water but I’ll try your chemical-free recipes. I buy environmental friendly cleaning products but still don’t feel comfortable to let the kids handle them.
Such a great idea! Does she use glass bottles? I worry about my little one dropping it on the tile.
Yes, my daughter uses glass bottles. Tile would concern me a bit too, but these little bottles are shockingly durable. They have been dropped a few times. So far we have never had one broken. Go with plastic if it feels safer 🙂
