Wire Bead Snowflake Ornament Craft Supplies
- Wire snowflake forms – We used a 3 3/4 inch wire snowflake form, but a star wireframe that is a bit larger also works well.
- Round nose pliers – inexpensive option or professional option
- Ribbon or monofilament line (fishing string)
- Swarovski crystals beads (Use beads sized 2mm to 8mm for smaller wire snowflake forms, and 2mm to 12mm beads for bigger snowflakes)
- Faceted (cut) glass beads
What are the Best Beads for Making Beaded Snowflake Ornaments?
Swarovski crystal beads make the most amazing beaded snowflake crafts for Christmas or the winter solstice. Of course, Faceted (cut) glass, or even plastic beads, can work to make bead snowflake Christmas ornaments on wire snowflake forms (and look very pretty), but crystals give that extra bit of sparkle that shines!
As mentioned in the supply section, 2mm to 8mm beads are best for the smaller wire snowflake forms. In contrast, larger beads, 2mm to 12mm, can be used on larger wire snowflake forms. There are lots of Christmas snowflake ornament beading options to make these crafts available today.
Use leftover beads to create beaded necklaces and bracelets to give as gifts. In my experience, children love beading, and it helps their hands become strong and supple. Remember, “nimble fingers make nimble minds.” Learn how to turn leftover beads into beautiful DIY necklaces HERE–> How to Make Beaded Jewelry.

Where did you get the beads?
The supplies list is in the article above Michelle.
Where do you get the star from to put the beads on?
Hi Leta,
The materials list above contains referral links to the snowflake forms we used.
What size beads did you use? That detail isn’t included in the supplies list. Very pretty and simple for a child to make!
Good question Ann,
First, make sure kids can handle small parts before offering this craft. Using a combination of sizes, shapes, and colors make the best snowflakes. Younger kids can create patterns and put the beads on the wire, but will more than likely need each arm of the snowflake closed for them. Older children will be able to do both. The same goes for bead sizes, smaller 4mm beads will be hard for younger kids to handle while older children will be able to use the smallest beads. Click on the bead links in the supplies list above to see lots of gorgeous options!
Excellent tutorials with photos and details! Even as an experienced beader, I picked up tips. Thank you!
Thanks Barb! So glad you could glean some new information… I’ve been a fan of beadwork since I was a young child. 🙂
How do you get the wires to stay together in the middle?
Hi Brandy,
We purchase the pre-made snowflake forms listed in snowflake ornament craft supplies! If you click on the link to purchase, Rhythms of Play will earn a small commission at no cost to you. 🙂
What size beads do I order?
Hi Rita, good question!
We like to use a variety of bead sizes and cuts to make beaded snowflake ornaments.
You can find affiliate links to a few bead options that would work in the supply section, and within the tutorial.
For beaded snowflakes, we generally use beads that are between 2mm through 8mm, with 6mm being a good middle of the road size. Larger 10mm and 12mm beads can be used on the bigger snowflake wire forms.
Happy crafting,
Nell
Where do u find the wire stars
Hello Gwen! The wireframes you need to make beaded snowflakes (or stars) are available at the Amazon affiliate links above and at many craft and jewelry supply stores.
Unfortunately the wire form linked in the directions does not bend enough to close and secure the beads. We tried several tools along with the needle nose pliers recommended. I couldn’t do it, my teen daughter couldn’t nor could my husband. We ended up glueing the last couple of beads on each branch and just hope they hold. I would not recommend this craft for that reason.
Hi Julie, I’m sorry that you had trouble closing the wire form to secure the beads on the snowflake ornament craft. The wire forms are hard to bend, but I recommend using round nose pliers, not needle nose pliers. I agree that it would be virtually impossible to close the loop with needle nose pliers! Even with round-nose pliers it can be really tough to close the loop, but it is possible–I promise. The forms are purposely hard to bend because it needs to be strong. Otherwise the beaded snowflake ornament would bend and break instead of staying strong to use year after year. I hope that helps, good luck and happy snowflake crafting!
Where do you get the star form, for snowflake????
Hi Wendy,
You can purchase the wire snowflake ornament forms in some craft and hobby stores or use the Amazon affiliate links provided for convenience in the “Snowflake Craft Supply” list posted above the step-by-step beaded snowflake ornament tutorial. Happy Christmas crafting!
Hi there! I plan on making these for a Christmas crafting day with some friends. I purchased the forms but how many beads should I plan on purchasing for each snowflake? I should have 10 people each making at least 1 snowflake.
Great question Renee! Unfortunately, there’s no uniform answer as it will depend on the size of the beads you use, the snowflake form you use, and if you use one size of bead or multiple as shown in photographs of the finished beaded snowflake ornament crafts. In other words, if you use larger 8mm beads you will needs less beads per snowflake, while if you use smaller 2mm or 4mm beads you will need more beads. If I was to give you a basic estimate for beaded snowflakes using the forms like those recommended in the supply section, you would need an average of 40 to 80 beads per hand-beaded project depending on the size of the beads. I hope that helps, happy snowflake crafting!
