Uh oh… our snowman has lost his head! Make snowman head ornaments with your children to decorate your Christmas tree this year. (This post was first published on December 10, 2016; it has been updated and republished to improve the content.)
Snowman head Christmas ornaments are a fun snowman craft that kids and adults can make to decorate the Christmas tree. When I asked my daughter if she wanted to build a snowman, she was thrilled! While I dreamed of making cute little snowmen, snowwomen, and snowman head ornaments to hang on the Christmas tree, she dreamed of bringing Olaf to life.
So we did both and then some! In fact, we went a little snowman-building crazy with these snowman head ornaments, snowman ornaments, and Frozen-inspired Olaf Ornaments! You might also enjoy these Christmas Ornaments Kids Can Make.

How to Make Snowman Head Ornaments
Wash your hands and clean your work surface. Polymer clay picks up every speck of dirt. This is especially important when working with white clay. We worked on a glass mat to protect our table from getting stained and keep the clay clean. Alternatively, you can use a silicone mat or a plastic placemat.
However, if you will be using a precision knife to cut the clay, do not use a silicone mat, or you might slice it. Instead, use the glass cutting mat we recommend in the snowman craft supplies.
It is also very important to wash your hands before working with white and again after working with color. As my daughter and I worked, I kept a wet washcloth nearby to clean our hands. A wet wipe can also keep your hands clean as you continue to work with the clay.
Once everyone’s hands are washed and the snowman craft supplies are ready, follow the step-by-step instructions below to make snowman head ornaments with kids. You might also enjoy this list of Christmas Art Projects and these Homemade Gifts for kids.
Polymer Clay Snowman Head Ornaments Step-by-Step Directions
Before starting this DIY project, please read through the step-by-step instructions to make snowman head ornaments and crafts so you know the steps involved and what to expect. You might also enjoy these fun Christmas Traditions.
1. Form pieces of clay snowman head ornaments.
- Make a ball of white polymer clay about an inch to an inch and a half in diameter for the head.
- Roll small black polymer clay balls to make a coal nose, eyes, and mouth.
- Make a carrot nose.
- Design a winter cap, top hat, etc. Get creative!
How to make a carrot nose for snowman head ornaments:
- Rolling a small ball of orange polymer clay is the easiest way to make a carrot nose.
- Press your finger down on one side of it and roll it like a snake until you have a small carrot.
How to make a top hat for a snowman head ornament:
- Form two balls of black polymer clay (or color of choice).
- Flatten one of the balls of black clay to create the bottom of the top hat.
- Use your forefinger and thumbs to create a cylinder shape from the second ball of black clay. (We found spinning it around while we worked to be effective.)
- Attach the cylinder shape to the top of the flattened circle to make a top hat. (See photos below)
How to make a winter hat for snowman head ornaments:
- Form a ball of polymer clay about the same size as the snowman head in another color.
- Create the cap from the larger ball of clay by placing your thumb on one side to create the inner edge, then gently pull and form the rest of the clay into a winter cap shape with your thumb and forefinger of the other hand. (Once again, we found spinning it around while we worked to be effective.)
- Attach a small ball of white polymer clay to the tip of the cap to make the pom-pom. (See photos below)
2. Assemble snowman head ornaments.
- Assemble the snowman head ornament by sticking the clay pieces you made together, as shown in the snowman craft photo tutorial below.
- Start by placing the cap or hat on the snowman’s head.
- Next, attach the nose, eyes, and dotted coal mouth.
3. Make hangers for snowman head ornaments.
- Complete this important step after assembly and before you bake it to make it easy to hang.
- First, use a pair of wire nippers to cut two one and 1/2-inch lengths of galvanized wire.
- Next, bend this length of wire in half.
- It will now resemble the shape of a long “U,” as shown in the snowman craft photo tutorial above.
- Finally, press this hook into the top of the snowman head ornament prongs down.
4. Bake snowman head ornaments.
- Bake the snowman heads according to the polymer clay manufacturer’s directions.
- We baked ours in a 275 F oven for 25-30 mins, sitting on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
