1. Use a singular sprinkler head for sprinkler play.
Instead of turning all of your sprinklers on, use a singular sprinkler head of some kind. If you must turn all of your sprinklers on, use a timer to keep it to 10 minutes or less.
Another idea is to change the time your sprinklers are set to go on in the summer from the early morning hours to the late afternoon early evening hours to give the kids a daily time to go for a barefoot run through the sprinklers!
2. Keep the water level low.
Keep the water flow as low as possible while still being fun. We like to keep it at belly button level for our children. There is plenty of water to play it and it doesn’t splash them in the face as much.
Lower flow = more time to have fun. High water flow = less time to have fun. Be water-wise.
3. Play in the sprinklers before 11 am or after 3 pm.
It’s wasteful to water mid-day and therefore wasteful to play in the sprinklers mid-day–even with the excuse that you are watering your lawn while playing.
Where we currently live, the highest temperatures are typically at 5 pm during the summer months. This is the perfect time to get outside and play in the sprinklers!
4. Put the sprinkler over dry patches or near plants that need to be watered.
We have some dry patches in our lawn because we don’t have our sprinklers set to go on every day. Throughout the summer months, we have our sprinklers set to go on for only 10 minutes every other day to conserve water. When we see dry patches on a hot day we consider it sprinkler play time.
5. Use a timer for water-wise sprinkler play.
Place your single sprinkler head over each dry patch in your backyard for about 5 – 10 minutes. Set a timer so you don’t forget to move it to the next patch or turn the water off.
