How to Make “Love Birds” Faux Stained Glass Craft
Follow the step-by-step instructions below to make kissing lovebird arts and crafts. Please note that the glass paint colors will fade a bit if placed in direct sunlight, but the lovebird design can easily be painted over again to renew and refresh the colors. Because these sure do make a lovely piece of DIY home decor that looks super sweet sitting in front of a window in the kitchen, office, or a child’s bedroom!
Faux-stained glass kissing lovebirds also look great when displayed on tables, shelves, entryways, and desktops. And of course, are also an excellent gift to pair with a personalized candle holder with a faux stained glass heart or hearts. Or have a look at this list of homemade gift ideas.
1. Download and print the kissing lovebirds’ art and craft template or design your own art.
- Download and print the small kissing lovebirds’ art template–or choose another design to print.
- Choose the printable lovebird outline craft template sized for your needs–there are three to choose from. (The large kissing lovebird printable doubles as a fun coloring page for kids or adults.)
- Or, feel free to create your own art to trace and use as a template for this DIY project and gift idea, and invite the kids to do the same!
2. Gather craft supplies and prepare the frame for painting.
- Collect the art and craft supplies you’d like to use from the list above.
- Next, remove the protective covering from both sides of one of the two clear plastic inserts that come with these pedestal picture frames and the Ikea Tolsby Frame.
3. Tape the kissing love birds art template to the inside of one of the frame windows that come with the pedestal picture frame.
- Tape the love birds to one of the clear plastic inserts that come with the Tolsby Frame, or to the inside of the glass or plastic frame window if you are using a different frame.
- Pedestal picture frames like the Ikea Tolsby Frame are made to hold a picture inside so they come with two plastic window inserts. But, since you will be painting on it–you will only need one. So, if goof up and make a mistake, you have another to paint. Or make two different designs and alternate them!
4. Trace the lovebird design (or another art template that fits inside the frame) with a glass paint outliner tube or extra fine-tip paint pen.
- Use a black glass paint outline tube or an extra-fine tip black paint marker to trace the kissing lovebirds, or another design, onto the clear plastic (or glass if you are using another type of frame) window.
- Allow the black outline to dry for at least 24 hours before moving on to the next step.
5. Apply glass paint with a paintbrush to paint and color the kissing lovebirds (or another design).
- Use glass paint or paint markers to color your design however you like. (See our glass painting tips below.)
- Allow the paint to dry before wrapping it up and giving it to someone you love as a gift, or displaying it as DIY home decor.

How to paint with glass paint
Painting with glass paint is a bit different than other paints. You want to load your brush with glass paint and dab it into the black outline to hold it. The more paint the better. If you brush it on you might not be able to see it once it dries. Make sure you use as much paint as you can for the lighter colors or they will be tough to see.
